JMA Riverland Winemaker of the Year 2008
The JMA Riverland Winemaker of the Year award is presented to a winemaker who has worked hard to raise the profile of the Riverland wine industry. Former recipients of the award have elected Eric Semmler of 919 Wines as the the 2008 award recipient.
Eric and Jenny Semmler have been involved in the wine industry since 1986, and share a passion for the fortified wines of Australia. Eric previously made fortified wines for Hardy Wine Company at Berri Estates, and worked at Brown Brothers in Milawa. Jenny has worked for Strathbogie Vineyards, Pennyweight Wines, St Huberts and Constellation Wines.
Our first vineyard was planted in 2002, and 919 Wines was established in 2004. The company has since established a reputation as a specialist fortified wine maker, and winemakers of high quality table wines. The company increased its vineyard holdings in 2011 in order to secure supply of grapes grown to our very stringent specifications. The winery was certified for organic production in 2010, and the original vineyard is certified biodynamic. The new vineyard is in pre-certification status, and anticipated to achieve “in conversion” status by the end of 2012.
HOW WE DO IT
All wines in 919’s portfolio are made from grapes grown in our own vineyard or by growers who are prepared to meet our stringent specifications for variety, water application, viticultural practises and organic certification status.
Our table wines are made from varieties that thrive in the hotter parts of the Mediterranean, reflecting the climate of the Riverland of South Australia. Our aim is to produce wines that are faithful to the variety and to the soil and climate of the vineyard. Most of our table wines from the 2011 vintage onwards will be certified organic. The grapes are picked at optimum ripeness, fermented, and the resulting wine matured in barrels until it is prepared for bottling. The resulting wines are elegant and structural, with fruit freshness and textural complexity. Cellaring potential varies according to vintage, variety and style, so be sure to read our winemaker’s notes for each wine.
We have planted varieties used in the fortified wines of Rutherglen, Portugal and Spain, inspired by the European traditions of making fortified wines. Low yielding vines capture and concentrate the varietal and regional characteristics of this fruit. Grapes are hand-picked, fermented in open fermenters and pressed gently in a basket press. The must is then fortified to stop fermentation and capture the flavours of the fruit. The resulting wine is matured in old wood, then blended to give a rich, complex wine of great intensity. The Vintage fortified is meant to be cellared for many years before opening. All other fortified wines are ready to drink when bottled.
